Kathmandu is an incredible place. Poverty is the norm. There are no heating systems in the houses that we could see, no chimneys even. The people are very devout, either Hindu or Buddhist, and you see monks everywhere you go.

The largest Stupa is a 10-minute walk from our hotel. I walk through a lovely path lined with rose bushes to a locked and guarded fence. Behind the fence is a small road leading to the Stupa. There are open air shops, small shacks and lean to’s, trash and dogs and the shell of buildings that were started some time ago but never finished, rebar sticking up in the air. These are curious structures, and I see them everywhere. In almost every one there is a lone light bulb strung from the nearest electrical pole, obviously stolen electricity. Here’s the thing, people are living in these structures. Let me describe what I mean: two, maybe three floors have been constructed of cement with strategically placed pillars of cement. No walls. The pillars extend just past the top floor with four to five feet of rebar extending further. There are no bathrooms, no running water, no kitchens, and no furniture. Just the light bulb and the people. They aren’t supposed to live there and you don’t see them until darkness falls. Then they claim the space for sleep.

As I walk further I see a few nice homes. Lace curtains, gardens, prayer flags and glass in the windows. The walkways are swept. These homes have tables and chairs and mats to sleep on.

More shops and people selling vegetables, spices and yak butter on the street. Yak butter is a beautiful color and it’s sold in large brick shapes wrapped in plastic. It doesn’t melt in the heat of the day. I can’t distinguish the different spices I smell, and one is over powering. I don’t like it at all! The road narrows and suddenly I come to the town ‘square’, only it’s a circle with the Stupa in the middle. You have to walk clockwise around the Stupa – very bad Karma if you don’t – and everyone is walking in the right direction. Prayer wheels are all around and inside and up on the top of the Stupa. They are all different sizes, and there are bells too. The devout are touching them all, spinning the wheels, touching their prayer beads to certain markers and ringing bells. Buddha’s eyes are huge on the top and face in each direction, prayer flags strung everywhere. Monks and other worshipers are prostrating themselves, water is offered to Buddha, candles and incense burn. It’s beautiful, and I love it here. Buddha’s watchful eyes bring peace.

It’s a lovely stroll around the Stupa with everyone walking together, and I enjoy the shops; anyone surprised? I really don’t like that one spice. I don’t know what it is and I can’t stay long enough near the sacks to ask. Then I see the cow in the walkway. Nepalese come to pet it as it meanders along with me. It even knows the right direction to walk!

It’s been very difficult to process all I’ve seen in Kathmandu. I have been hounded by hawkers who are very difficult to shake. The poor are everywhere and most of them are trying to earn some kind of living. I’m told most families exist on less than $10.00 a week.

And, I’m tucked away in this five-star hotel just on the other side of the guarded gates, drinking wine and eating fabulous curries and sleeping in beds.

Kathmandu has its treasures to be sure. Mount Everest and the Himalaya’s are spectacular. I will come back.

The NESA conference is fantastic and well attended. We met over 400 delegates from 120 schools in the region. Everyone is a passionate educator focused on educational reform and providing the best for their students. These are the best of the best; they are disruptive innovators changing the world.

Hi all,

Here is the first of my journal entries! Much more to come, but for now, sleep calls-

The flight over to Abu Dhabi was magnificent! Etihad Airlines is spectacular and it was the most comfortable 14-hour flight I have ever taken! Of course, it’s the first 14-hour flight I’ve ever taken, but if you have to fly that far, by all means make it Etihad Airlines!

When I walked off the concourse into the main terminal in Abu Dhabi, I was greeted with the most magnificent mosaic design I’ve seen in an airport and maybe anywhere outside of Barcelona!

I spent one night in Abu Dhabi before heading to Kathmandu, which turns out to be the best advice from my travel agent. I am the worst with jet lag. I have not experienced any so far on this trip!

The decent into Kathmandu was another magnificent experience. We didn’t come in over Everest, but instead descended over the foothills of the Himalayas and what sight to behold. The mountains are smaller than you would expect, because when you think of the Himalaya’s you think huge, but these were the foothills.

Kathmandu sits in the valley of the foothills and it is lush, and rich with vegetation and so very green. (We are coming at the end of the rainy season) But, the green is pocked by the presence of man. Clearly, the presence of a culture not concerned about their impact on the environment. Soon I will discover this is a culture so poor that the only thought is day to day living. Future consists of making sure you can wake up the next day and find food for your family, and keep warm in the winter.

The runway at the airport is incredibly short and you are jolted into a sudden screeching halt when the airplane lands.

The airport is barrack like, and long lines of people wait to process their visas. Odors of all sorts bombard our senses. It’s hotter than we expect and no air is circulating in the building. When we exit the airport, we are bombarded by a throng of people, vying for our attention to take their taxi to our destination. We of course are staying at the hotel in Kathmandu, where the conference we are attending is located. So, we have people waiting for us who whisk us through the crowd to an air-conditioned van that takes us to our hotel beyond heavily guarded gates. Our luggage perched precariously on top!

Along the way, we drive through the city and I am reminded of scenes from the slums of “Slum Dog Millionaire”. The slums of India we have seen in the movies are commonplace in Nepal too. A family of 4 zoom passes us on a motorcycle. The youngest in the group couldn’t have been more than three. No helmets or car seats required here!

Garbage piles are every 100 yards or so, the river littered throughout, and goats and cows roam freely. People are selling vegetables along the roads, not in stalls, but literally on the street. I heard that Kathmandu is the #1 place in the world for traveler’s diarrhea and now I know why! My doctor told me if I can’t crack it or peal it myself, don’t eat it. I suddenly realize I must take him seriously!

I see a ‘community’ water source and next I see a woman washing her clothes and her pots on the side of the road. In the dirt. On the ground. Oh my, I’ve landed in a third world country! Nothing I’ve read has prepared me for what I am seeing.

As we turn into the gates of the hotel – did I mention, it’s heavily guarded – they do a search of our vehicle for explosives before we were allowed to enter. We realize we are in an oasis in the midst of chaos. Then we see a man urinating along the road inside the compound. I’m reminded, the chaos is very very close.

Weird fact: Kathmandu is nine hours and 45 minutes ahead of Atlanta. Yes! 45 minutes are added to the time zone difference! Weird huh?

I love you all.

When you go to sleep tonight, give thanks for all you have. We are so very very lucky.
